Comprehensive vs Third Party Fire & Theft vs Third Party: which one actually fixes your car?
Third party, TPFT or comprehensive: which one actually fixes your car? The short answer: only comprehensive pays for accident damage to your own car.
Here is what each plan really covers in Malaysia in 2026, and the add-ons none of them include by default.
What the law requires
Under the Road Transport Act 1987 (section 90), it is an offence to use a motor vehicle on a public road without insurance covering third-party risks. The legal minimum is liability for death or bodily injury to other people.
You also need valid motor insurance or takaful before you can renew your road tax. Our step-by-step renewal guide walks through the order, and the free Road Tax Calculator shows what the road tax itself costs.
The three common plans
Third party only
Covers your legal liability for injury or death to others and damage to their property. It never pays for your own car.
Third party, fire and theft (TPFT)
Everything in third party, plus loss or damage to your own car from fire (including lightning, explosion and self-ignition) and theft or attempted theft. Accident damage to your own car is not covered.
Comprehensive
Everything above, plus accident damage to your own car (collision, overturning), malicious damage and falling objects, even when you are at fault. This is subject to the usual exclusions such as wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown and depreciation.
Side-by-side comparison
| What is covered | Third party | TPFT | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Injury or death to others | |||
| Damage to other people's property | |||
| Your car: fire | |||
| Your car: theft | |||
| Your car: accident damage | |||
| Flood, storm, landslide | Add-on (special perils) | ||
| Liability to your own passengers | Add-on |
What none of them cover by default
- Flood, storm and landslide. These need a special perils add-on at extra premium. The northeast monsoon season is a good time to check whether special perils is on your policy.
- Liability to passengers in your own private car. This is an add-on too.
- Non-factory accessories, unless they are declared.
Other add-ons insurers commonly offer include windscreen cover, all-driver cover, towing and motor personal accident. Check your policy schedule and Product Disclosure Sheet to see exactly what you have.
Your NCD and your plan
Your No Claim Discount builds over five claim-free years, up to a maximum of 55%:
| Claim-free years | NCD on own-damage premium |
|---|---|
| After 1 claim-free year | 25% |
| 2 years | 30% |
| 3 years | 38.33% |
| 4 years | 45% |
| 5 years or more | 55% (maximum) |
An at-fault own-damage claim resets your NCD to 0%. On a comprehensive policy, if the accident was not your fault you can claim own damage under the knock-for-knock arrangement (ODKFK) without losing your NCD, provided there is no third-party bodily injury claim, according to Bank Negara Malaysia.

If your car is underinsured, the payout is cut in proportion under the average clause. Say your car is worth RM55,000 but insured for RM40,000, and a repair costs RM10,000: the insurer pays only about RM7,273, and you cover the rest yourself.
Our renewal guide explains how to check your sum insured against the car's market value at every renewal.
Which one do people usually pick?
This is general information, not advice. Comprehensive is usually chosen for newer or higher-value cars, and by drivers who could not easily pay for their own repairs. TPFT or third party is more often chosen for older, lower-value cars where own repairs would cost less than the extra premium.
Ask your agent to quote all three so you can compare the actual difference for your car.

Is third party insurance enough in Malaysia?
It meets the legal minimum and lets you renew your road tax, but it never pays for your own car. If your car is damaged in an accident, the repair bill is yours.
Does comprehensive insurance cover flood?
Not by default. Flood, storm and landslide damage needs the special perils add-on, which costs extra premium. Check your policy schedule to see if it is on your policy.
Does TPFT cover accidents?
TPFT covers damage you cause to other people and their property, plus your own car if it is lost or damaged by fire or theft. Accident damage to your own car is not covered.
Will a not-at-fault claim affect my NCD?
On a comprehensive policy, an own-damage claim under the knock-for-knock arrangement (ODKFK) does not affect your NCD, provided there is no third-party bodily injury claim.
