Renewing Car Insurance & Road Tax in Malaysia (2026): The Step-by-Step Guide

Renewing your car insurance and road tax starts with getting the order right. Check your dates, cover and NCD before paying, then keep proof of both renewals.

Here is what to check in 2026, from the first renewal notice to your digital road tax.

Insurance first, then road tax

JPJ will not renew road tax (Lesen Kenderaan Motor) unless the vehicle has active motor insurance or takaful cover — at least third party — for the renewal period. Insurance renewal always comes first.

Many drivers arrange both in one go through an insurance agent. With the insurance in place, road tax can be renewed through MyJPJ, JPJ or Pos Malaysia counters.

When to start

Road tax can be renewed up to 2 months before expiry without changing your renewal cycle. Insurers typically send renewal notices about two months ahead. This suggested timeline leaves time to check your cover:

Suggested car insurance and road tax renewal timeline
Days before expiryWhat to do
60 daysCheck both expiry dates in MyJPJ and your policy schedule
30 daysGet quotes, check sum insured and NCD
14 daysPay and renew insurance
7 daysRenew road tax and save the e-cover note and digital road tax
Expiry dayNothing left to do

There is no grace period: the vehicle is unlicensed the day after road tax expires.

Step-by-step renewal checklist

  1. Check both expiry dates

Check your policy schedule and road tax expiry in MyJPJ.

  2. Check your sum insured

Compare it with the car's current market value.

  3. Confirm your NCD

Make sure your No Claim Discount has carried over correctly.

  4. Choose your cover type

Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft, or Third Party only.

  5. Review add-ons

Check windscreen, special perils (flood/landslide), additional named drivers, legal liability of passengers, and e-hailing cover if you drive for Grab or similar services.

  6. Pay and get your e-cover note

Keep the confirmation of your renewed insurance cover.

  7. Renew road tax

Use MyJPJ, JPJ, Pos Malaysia or your agent, and keep proof of the digital licence.

Bring your IC and payment when renewing at a counter. Inspection is generally not needed for private cars, but is required for commercial vehicles or if road tax has been expired for more than 3 years.

Your No Claim Discount (NCD)

Your private-car NCD builds with claim-free years, up to a maximum of 55%:

Claim-free yearsNCD on own-damage premium
After 1 claim-free year25%
2 years30%
3 years38.33%
4 years45%
5 years or more55% (maximum)
  • An at-fault claim resets NCD to 0%. Claims paid by the other driver's insurer (third-party claims) do not affect your NCD.
  • NCD belongs to the policyholder. It transfers to your next car and between insurers, but applies to one vehicle at a time.
  • It stays valid up to 3 years after selling a car without replacing it.
  • It does not transfer when ownership passes to a spouse or child. Company cars' NCD belongs to the company.

Don't get caught underinsured

If your sum insured is below the car's market value, the average clause means the insurer only pays a proportion of each claim.

Worked example

  • Car market value at claim: RM55,000
  • Sum insured: RM40,000
  • Repair bill: RM10,000
  • Payout = 40,000 ÷ 55,000 × RM10,000 ≈ RM7,273
  • You pay about RM2,727 yourself.

Market value means what the car is worth at the time of loss. Agreed value is a fixed sum agreed at renewal, paid in full on total loss. Check which basis your policy uses and review your sum insured at every renewal.

How premiums are priced in 2026

Since 1 July 2017, under Bank Negara Malaysia's motor liberalisation, Comprehensive and Third Party Fire & Theft premiums are set by each insurer or takaful operator based on your risk profile.

Besides sum insured, engine capacity, car age and driver age, they can consider safety and security features, location, how much the car is on the road, and traffic offences. Third Party-only cover stays on tariff rates. The NCD structure is unchanged, so comparing quotes at renewal is worthwhile.

Road tax: what it costs

For an individually-owned saloon in Peninsular Malaysia, annual road tax is RM 90.00 at 1,499cc, RM 279.20 at 1,798cc, and RM 380.00 at 2,000cc. A 150 kW EV pays RM 160.00.

Already expired?

There is no grace period. Driving with expired road tax is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987, and any summons must be settled before you can renew.

Driving without valid insurance is an offence under Section 90 of the Road Transport Act 1987, with a fine of up to RM1,000, up to 3 months' jail, or both.

Renew insurance first, settle summonses, then renew road tax.
